Good Food for Good Health

Okay so good food, healthy food is not always know for its ease and affordability or for that many family friendly budgeting but, if you can put this stereotyping of the good stuff aside I have a few hints and tips to make it affordable, family friendly and yum.

Firstly, you do NOT need to shop at Coles,  Woolworth’s, IGA for everything in fact you can do most of your shopping at places like the  affordable whole foods                                  ( https://www.affordablewholefoods.com.au/ )  shop either online of personally where you can pick up bulk items for less than packaged price and as good if not better quality as its generally Australian, or high quality anyways.

With this in mind you can now start to organise your cupboards and have a range of healthy alternatives for yourself, children and guest. Start by thinking about what you can make with the foods you wish to purchase so that you aren’t just getting a pile of ingredients that aren’t appropriate to your needs and also have an idea as to what you and your family like to eat most of the time, this should be your guide to purchasing foods and stop over expenditure or sudden dietary changes.

Be gentle with how and what you wish to change in your lifestyle don’t rush and try to become a full blown vegetarian, vegan or paleo if this is not you if trying these styles of living add them once a week not daily to see how it works.

Now that you have all your whole foods sorted ( nuts, seeds, rice, flour, pasta etc) lets have a look at fruit and vegetables. Just like the above store there are ways to purchase your fruit and vegetables without breaking the bank and thats farmers markets and in season produce from the supermarket. you will recognise in season by the amount on the shelves and the price is usually lower than when out of season. The other option is to plant a couple of your favourite fruit vegetable staples in your own yard, balcony etc. Eating in season is also better for your body and then nutritional benefits are higher as its ripe now.

Now the last staple is meats, this is just as easy especially for those in the cities, go for the fish markets for your seafoods, it’s fresh, cheaper than the supermarkets and can be filleted your way. red meats find a farm butcher, they are there ask around or check the internet, they also have delivery services to some areas.

So there you have it, you can be nutritionally balanced, enjoy great tasting foo and live within a really great budget. I have a family of six to feed and do this every few weeks so for the most my fortnightly budget is $300 and every 8 weeks it may go to $400 when I am running low on cleaners and a few standard essentials.

I get asked all the time how I stay in a much smaller budget well here is the answer I buy bulk and cook for my family, I don’t buy takeaway, or alot of packaged foods e.g cheese three ways just the block.

BASIL & MACADAMIA NUT PESTO

Ingredients:

1 clove garlic crushed

1/4 cup raw macadamia nuts

1 cup basil leaves

1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese

2 tablespoons olive oil

pinch of Celtic salt

1 teaspoon of savoury yeast flakes

 

Method:

  1. In a food processor pulse the garlic and macadamia nuts until mixed.
  2. Add the basil leaves and Parmesan cheese and blend again until you have an even consistency (don’t overdo it)
  3. Add the olive oil and Celtic salt and pulse for another 10 -15 seconds
  4. Serve into a bowl and sprinkle with nutritional yeast flakes

 

Inspiration:

Pesto is such a personal experience and you can mix it up in so many ways. Experimenting with using different herbs, nuts and seeds is a great way to do this.

We recommend with this recipe replacing the basil with parsley, or to make a wetter pesto, to add more olive oil to the mix. Enjoy!

Yoga every damn day 

If you have never tried Yoga I have to let you in on a massive secret, it’s the biggest natural high you will experience without throwing yourself off a bridge with a rope around your ankles.

If you have tried yoga and hated it then here is the secret to it sucking for you, you had the wrong teacher/ experience.

Yoga is many things to many people and I can honestly tell you that once you get the right teacher, perfect place to practice and a mind that’s ready to give peace ago you will benefit greatly from the experience and will have the yoga stoned glow that is the best thing ever.

Too many people assume that you have to bend like a pretzel or be super skinny to do yoga, you really really don’t you know. I am definitely no bending like a pretzel nor do I feel the need to prove how flexible I am, I am also not twiggy as any mother of 1 child or 10 will attest to.

I do however love my yoga and have had fabulous teachers along the way with the most recent being Carrie-Anne fields from My Health Yoga. She inspired me and also helped to reinvigorate my practice and also helped me through my pregnancy with motivation from another late term mother.

My advice to all is to try yoga and look for different styles, teachers and places before saying that it’s not for you.

Yoga, Fitness & Life

I know I have been AWOL and thats not ideal when you do a blog. So here it is life as we have it ATM.

My little Rubin is now 3 and Gypsy turned 1 last month, it has been a busy season for my husband and therefore the family with honey production but its now eased off for the next few months.

On the Yoga / Fitness front I have since speaking last completed the Athletics Australia Level 1 Community Coaching course and am now ready to add this to the fun part of teaching kids ( mine included) I now teach Yoga twice a week in #GlenInnesNSW and also teach Kettle bells after on those 2 days which I totally LOVE.

I would love to announce to you all some fabulously amazing things that have happened but nothing much yet. At anytime your passing and want to see what I am up to come and visit the face book page and #Followme for loads of information that I don’t always get here to write about.

Blog of a Yoga Hippy

This is the first blog of my entire life, actually its the first time I have written, typed of expressed publicly my thoughts but, hear I am on this computer typing away knowing full well that I have atrocious punctuation and grammar.

Well so you know I am currently no age and teach yoga and specifically Yin Yoga, I am passionate about peace, harmony, and the feminine soul and am 100% positive that I am a very biased mother of 5 children, 1- 18yr old , then 5,4,3,and 9 mths and am I really sure that I will never have another child….no way as they are so cute and sweet that I can excuse the temper tantrums especially when they say “hug mummy” when they know that they are in trouble.

I have been told I can sound like am giving a lecture and as I am typing instead of speaking I guess you all have escaped this problem. I do occasionally have alot to say depending on whats happening or not at the same time I can also go MIA for an extended period….life is not always that exciting.

So write now I am finishing my level 2 teacher training and am a qualified Yin Yoga level 1 yoga teacher ( certified) I have been practicing for over 25+ years and was trained whilst I was young long before paper certifications where needed. yoga has helped me in the birthing of all 5 of my children along with physical injuries that life has given me ( stupidity).

I am not a vegan but am a vegetarian that listens to my body as to what it needs. I also have to say I do not impose my vegetarianism on my family I believe that every ones body is different and what works for me doesn’t mean it will work for you. We all have different body types physical differences and energy requirement and I am not a medical or Ayuvendic practitioner and therefore have no rights to force my eating on others. Equally I am a vegetarian due to medical reasons as well as choice ( crohns sufferer) meat and gluten have never agreed with me since I was 12.

I wish this to be a great place for people to enjoy and ask questions or comment freely on subjects we speak about. This is a place for everyone to feel accepted for who they are and not critiqued for what they appear to others not to do correctly. This is a site that is for nurturing and caring for each other.

so If you can get past the bad grammar, atrocious punctuation and the lack of occasional spelling mistakes also the times when I do the MIA thing then you will see that what I have written is from the heart and a passion for family,  yoga and meditation the practice that helps make our lives infinitely more spiritual and creates a nurturing environment for ourselves and family members. Femininity without media influence

Our beautiful feminine logo,   This represents everything that naturally fit bodies wants to portray. You know what, the media has made us all so insecure about who we are and I am well aware that what I am about to say will come across as a feminist rant but, I am ok with that because its all true. If you are not skinny (size8) photoshopped (famous,), or in yoga bending like a pretzel you are inadequate. This is not true you should NEVER have to feel like crap for being the beautiful women you are. we really do have to remember that the people in the magazines do have cellulite, are photoshopped to make them look perfect and do get wrinkles like the rest of us. The media is the one that has decided that we need touching up not us. Go back a few years ago when Jamie Lee Curtis did a photo shoot for I think woman’s day ( or something like that) she decided to show all women out there what she really looked like. So she went ahead with the shoot on the proviso that they did a natural and photoshopped version, oh and guess what she looked like the rest of us in the before, Thanks Jamie Lee Curtis. So my message is to embrace and surrender to your beautiful self, accept it , embrace it, love it as NO one is more beautiful, wonderful and as feminine as you. xxx Om Shanti.
