When I first saw a class listing at my local yoga studio for aerial silk yoga I thought that the yoga community had finally taken it too far. Whats next, ceiling yoga? But I gave it a try and now I’m completely hooked.
You need a little bit of a yoga background in order to start, just so your body is a tiny bit stretchy and you don’t injure yourself just trying to get in there, but you really don’t need to be a circus performer. Once you learn a few moves it’s kind of like just sitting in a giant stretchy swing and since the silk spreads out, you can hold a yoga pose for a while and let gravity stretch you out with out needing tons of muscles to do some of the bigger inversions, like head stands and what not.
